چکیده

Computationally advanced biomechanical analyses of gait demonstrate the often counter-intuitive roles of joint moments on various aspects of gait such as propulsion, swing initiation, and balance. Each joint moment can produce linear and angular acceleration of all body segments (including those on which the moment does not directly act) due to the dynamic coupling inherent in the interconnected musculoskeletal system. This study presents quantitative relationships between individual joint moments and trunk control with respect to balance during gait to show that the ankle, knee, and hip joint moments all affect the angular acceleration of the trunk. We show that trunk angular acceleration is affected by all joints in the leg with varying degrees of dependence during the gait cycle. Furthermore, it is shown that inter-planar coupling exists and a two-dimensional analysis of trunk balance neglects important out-of-plane joint moments that affect trunk angular acceleration.

Prediction of Body Center of Mass Acceleration From Trunk and Lower Limb Joints Accelerations During Quiet Standing

Purpose: Predicting body Center of Mass (COM) acceleration is carried out with more accuracy based on the acceleration of three joints of lower limb compared to only accounting joints of hip and ankle. Given that trunk movement during quite standing is noticeable, calculating trunk acceleration in model might increase prediction accuracy of COM acceleration. Moreover, in previous research studi...

Contrasting roles of inertial and muscle moments at knee and ankle during paw-shake response.

Intralimb kinetics of the paw-shake response (PSR) were studied in four spinal, adult cats. Using rigid body equations of motion to determine the dynamic interactions between limb segments, knee and ankle joint kinetics were calculated for the steady-state cycles as defined in the preceding paper. Hindlimb motion was filmed (200 frames/s) to obtain knee and ankle kinematics. Responses of flexor...

Induced acceleration contributions to locomotion dynamics are not physically well defined.

Induced acceleration analysis quantifies the contributions of individual moments and forces to the accelerations, reaction forces, and powers produced during a task. The analysis has been advocated in the assessment of muscle and joint moment function during locomotion. However, results and interpretations drawn from the analysis have differed considerably between studies. The purpose of this p...

Kinetic chain of overarm throwing in terms of joint rotations revealed by induced acceleration analysis.

This study investigated how baseball players generate large angular velocity at each joint by coordinating the joint torque and velocity-dependent torque during overarm throwing. Using a four-segment model (i.e., trunk, upper arm, forearm, and hand) that has 13 degrees of freedom, we conducted the induced acceleration analysis to determine the accelerations induced by these torques by multiplyi...

Three - Dimensional I nteractions in a Two - Segment Kinetic Chain . Part I : General Model

The motion of a body segment is determined by joint torques and by the motions of the segments proximal or distal to it. This paper describes a threedimensional model that was used to determine the effects of the shoulder and elbow joint torques and of the upper trunk and arm motions on the angular accelerations of the arm segments during baseball pitching. Equations were developed to fractiona...
